Patients and Professionals Insight Surveys: Secondary/Metastatic Cancer

We want to hear from people living with secondary/metastatic cancer and from professionals working with them to understand how the secondary cancer pathway meets the patients’ needs.

The definition of secondary/metastatic cancer is:

When a cancer starts in one place in the body and spreads elsewhere, this is a secondary cancer or a ‘metastasis’. The place in the body where cancer first starts is the ‘primary cancer’. Sometimes, cancer cells can break off from the primary cancer and spread elsewhere in the body. Cancer can then grow in another part of the body. When this happens, this is secondary (metastatic) cancer.

Our survey is for people living with a secondary/metastatic cancer diagnosis in Greater Manchester. If you are a family member or carer of a person with secondary/metastatic cancer you can also complete this survey on their behalf (from their perspective) as long as it is a recent experience – within the last 18 months. This survey should take approximately 10 minutes to complete.

The professional survey is for people working with secondary/metastatic cancer patients in Greater Manchester.

Healthwatch Oldham wants to understand the perspective of people working with secondary cancer patients, the pathway, resources they use, what is working well and what could work better. The survey will take between 5 and 10 minutes to complete.

We will formulate a report with recommendations to help inform and guide Healthcare Commissioners and cancer care services on realistic changes to improve the care and support for secondary/metastatic cancer patients. Healthwatch Oldham will then monitor the changes implemented and the impact they have.

Healthwatch Oldham would like to thank Jo Taylor from After Breast Cancer Diagnosis and METUPUK who is living with secondary breast cancer for her collaboration and support with the surveys.

The survey is live from 2nd May and will close at the end of June 2024.  During this time, there will be the offer to undertake focus groups and 1 to 1 interviews to gather more information.

We anticipate publishing the report in August 2024.
