Studio G Photography - The Open Shutters Project

The Open Shutters photographic project is a series of black & white portraits aimed at showing mental illness presents massive challenges to those who experience it and the people around them, it needn’t mean an end to dreams and ambition...

These portraits tell the stories of people who have found strength and direction from their mental health journey.

In addition to the portrait, our subjects are asked to answer a few questions, in writing or on video, whichever they prefer, about their mental health history and their career. They share as much or as little information as makes them comfortable, so there’s no pressure at all.

And finally, we ask our subjects to bring with them an object of any kind that has significance to them in their mental health journey. For example, so far we’ve had a family photograph, a law book, a theatrical mask and a lapel badge amongst other things.

We’d like the project to be representative of our diverse society, so we’d particularly like to hear from people from black and minority ethnic communities.
